What exactly is the M3 Handy Auger?
The M3 is a handheld, hydromechanical horizontal boring tool. It is designed to allow a single operator to bore under sidewalks, driveways, and small roads to install pipes and conduits for irrigation, electrical, or plumbing needs without trenching.
What is the maximum boring distance of the M3?
While soil conditions play a major role, the M3 is typically used for runs up to 30 to 40 feet. Experienced operators have successfully completed longer runs in ideal soil, but for anything over 50 feet, we generally recommend moving up to our Model 12 "Mighty Max."
What diameter hole can it bore?
The M3 is optimized for small-diameter utility work. It typically creates a hole from 2" to 4" in diameter, which is perfect for most residential and commercial utility conduits, fiber optics, and irrigation lines.
What powers the M3 Handy Auger?
The M3 is powered by a high-torque, handheld industrial drill (typically 1/2" or 3/4" drive). It can be used with electric, cordless (high-capacity), or pneumatic drills. The drill provides the rotation, while the operator provides the manual thrust.
Why does the M3 require a water connection?
The M3 uses a "wet boring" process. By attaching a standard garden hose to the tool, water is pumped through the center of the stem to the cutting bit. This serves two purposes:
Lubrication: It cools the bit and reduces friction between the stem and the soil.
Slurry Creation: It turns the displaced soil into a slurry that flows back out of the hole, clearing the path for the pipe.
Is it a one-man operation?
Yes. One of the primary advantages of the M3 is that it can be operated by a single person. Because it weighs only a few pounds (plus the drill), it is easy to transport in a standard work truck and set up in minutes.
What types of soil can the M3 handle?
The M3 performs exceptionally well in loam, sand, and clay. It is designed to "jiggle" or push aside small rocks and pebbles. However, it is not intended for solid rock, heavy cobble, or large tree roots. For those conditions, a heavier machine with carbide-tipped bits is required.
Are the cutting bits replaceable?
Yes. We offer replacement High-Performance Bits specifically designed for the M3. Because these bits eventually wear down depending on the abrasiveness of your local soil, they are designed to be easily swapped out to maintain peak boring speed.
What maintenance does the M3 require?
The M3 is remarkably low maintenance. After each use, we recommend:
Rinsing the tool and stems to remove mud and grit.
Checking the water seals for leaks.
Applying a light coat of lubricant to the connections to prevent rust and ensure easy disassembly.
Does the M3 use standard Bor-it hex drives?
No. To keep the weight down for handheld use, the M3 uses a specialized, lightweight threaded or small-pin connection system rather than the heavy 2-1/4" hex found on our larger machines.
Can I use the M3 for dry boring?
We strongly recommend against dry boring with the M3. Without the water slurry to remove spoils and cool the bit, the tool can quickly become stuck or overheated, potentially damaging both the auger and your drill.
